Filing for county, state and federal offices opens May 19

The race to November’s general election officially begins Tuesday, May 19 with the opening of the initial filing period. Filing for county, state and federal offices begins at 8 a.m. May 19 and ends at 5 p.m., Tuesday, June 2.

Filing offices will be closed Monday, May 25, 2026, in observance of Memorial Day.

Candidates for federal offices must file at the Office of the Secretary of State, State Veterans Services Building, 20 W 12th St., St. Paul, MN 55155. Filing for state offices can be done at the Office of the Secretary of State or with the county auditor of the county in which the candidate resides. In Rice County, that office is at the Government Services Building, 320 Third St. NW, Faribault.

Candidates may file in person or by mail, if the filing is received during the filing period. Candidates who will be absent from the state during the filing period and meet the requirements of Minnesota Statutes section 204B.09 (1a), may arrange to file during the week immediately preceding the candidate’s absence.

Candidates for judicial office may file either with the Office of the Minnesota Secretary of State or with the County Auditor in the county where the candidate resides. A candidate filing for the Minnesota Court of Appeals seats that has been designated for one of the congressional districts must reside in that district.
